Thirty thousand electronic music fans thundered into Shenzhen’s Longgang Sports Center last weekend for the city’s inaugural Budweiser Storm Festival.
While the event failed to bring in the 80,000 people that attended Shanghai’s Budweiser Storm Festival over two days (a revised number from festival organizers), for an introductory year its performance is commendable.
“We have been lucky this year in Shenzhen, we also had the One Love Music Festival,” said Sara (who adamantly refused to provide her last name). “But the scale of this concert is so much bigger than anything else I have seen here.”
The event hit an early snag Friday when festival organizers announced Afrojack, one of the festival’s biggest names, would not be performing Saturday evening. The revelation angered some festivalgoers and prompted organizers to offer ticket refunds for the Saturday portion of the festival.
This left Kaskade, Fedde le Grand and Showtek, along with several other distinguished artists, to fill the unexpected void.
"With a rather paltry lineup, it's kind of disappointing that a headliner would cancel last minute," festivalgoer Ibrahim Ali told That’s on Saturday.
Despite this set back, the show went on in fine fashion, with flashy costumes, almost-infinite Budweiser, deafening electronic beats (our ears are still ringing) and the grandest stage set-up ever to grace Shenzhen (as far as we are aware).
